Y.CO has announced its sponsorship of Exxpedition North Pacific 2018, an all-female sailing and research mission to study the problem of plastics in the world’s oceans.

The voyage is slated to begin in Hawaii and end 3,000 miles later in Seattle, with the 24 women cruising through the North Pacific Gyre — better known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It’s believed to be the densest zone of plastic accumulation anywhere on Earth.

A secondary goal for the program is to inspire more girls and women to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects, and ultimately undertake STEM professions.
