Onyx Marine has revealed details of the automation system it installed aboard the Extra 86 from Extra Yachts, a brand within the Palumbo Superyachts group.
The automation system includes a graphical interface with a 32-inch touchscreen display at the bridge. From that screen, users can monitor everything from bilge pumps, batteries and generators to tank levels, navigation lights, portholes, doors and more.
Users also can control air conditioning, machine-room ventilation and the yacht’s power management system from the touchscreen.
The system has a central processing unit that acts as a “hot-swap backup,” meaning it can take over from the main unit seamlessly, according to Onyx. A second Ethernet and CAN-bus network are also on board as backups, to ensure there will always be active alarms and alarm-history management.
This particular system also manages the yacht’s service batteries, which are recharged using solar energy. The glazed surfaces of the salon on the Extra 86 are built with photovoltaic cells for producing energy that powers the onboard lights and appliances, without having to switch on the generators.
Battery charging, too, is controlled and managed directly by the Onyx Marine automation system.
What is Onyx Marine? It’s a Team Italia company that provides custom components for automated systems aboard yachts.
