Ft. Lauderdale
I go to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show for no more than a few days each year and am generally expected to well, work, damn it! But you can and should build some time in to your trip to really explore this town, which has more going for it than just the world’s largest boat show.
Start with the beaches. Fort Lauderdale’s beaches are beautiful, stretching along 23 miles of Atlantic coast. The FLIBS happens after the annual sea turtle nesting season has ended, so you won’t have to worry about trampling the young ones as they head for the sea. Many of Fort Lauderdale’s finest hotels and restaurants are along the beach, so pick your accommodations carefully and you may be able to sneak a barefoot sunset walk after a long day at the show and before a great dinner out.
There are over 4,000 restaurants in and around Fort Lauderdale and they range from very casual to fine dining. Favorites are Tropical Acres Steakhouse www.tropicalacres.com, which has been wowing the hungry since 1949, with high marks for its steak, seafood, and pastas! Canyon Southwest Café, www.canyonfl.com, is popular for its southwestern cuisine with Asian accents, and Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Company, www.bubbagump.com, whose “flip flops welcome” attitude and beachfront dining keep laid back vacationers happy.
