Yacht crews were busy wiping windows, polishing water toys and drying the morning dew from their yachts, making sure each one gleamed as guests and brokers visited them at the Newport Charter Yacht Show. But the yachts weren’t the only things on display. A series of competitions pitted charter crews against one another in a battle to determine the best chefs and smoothie makers.Daniel Harding, Jr.

“This will be the most refreshing drink you’ve ever had in your life,” said one crew member aboard the 151-foot Delta Katya as he fired up a blender, mixing his signature smoothie. Garnishing the beverage with an umbrella, he implored his guests to give him high marks in the smoothie taste-test competition.Daniel Harding, Jr.

The main course of the competition was best charter yacht chef. On the morning of the competition, each participant was given a basket of locally sourced ingredients along with a curveball: dietary restrictions they needed to accommodate. This could have been enough to frazzle even the most decorated chefs, but these charter crews have seen it all before.Daniel Harding, Jr.

“I think any chef in the charter industry needs to be well versed in all types of cooking,” explained winning chef Esther Rupenovic. “We could get a last-second guest who is a vegetarian or vegan, and we have to be prepared to accommodate that.”Daniel Harding, Jr.

Rupenovic won over a panel of judges and impressed a crowd of onlookers with a heart-healthy dish of smoked mussels, clams, pickled beets, horseradish and soba noodles. From exciting culinary competitions to refreshing smoothies for guests, it would seem that the organizers of the 2014 Newport Charter Yacht Show have discovered a recipe for success.
