Ptarmigan, a 2002 Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX, has entered the market at $525,000. The Grand Banks 49 Eastbay HX is known for its performance, comfort and classic style, along with a seakindly ride.
Ptarmigan is powered by twin 660 hp Caterpillar 3196TA diesel engines (1,220 hours) that are connected to bronze, five-blade propellers. Ptarmigan has a 45,000-pound displacement and quickly spools up to just over 30 knots. Cruise speed is about 25 knots. At 9 knots, range is a reported 1,200 nautical miles.
Step aboard Ptarmigan’s cockpit via a transom door from the full-beam teak swim platform. Padded, aft-facing mezzanine seating allows guests to really enjoy the spacious cockpit area, which could be used for entertainment, fishing or catching some sun. Hatches on the deck lead to the engine room and a Freedom lift secures the fiberglass inflatable dinghy.
Enter the helm deck and take a seat to port on the L-shaped settee. The settee has stowage under the seats and a hi-low table for dining. A reverse- cycle heat and A/C unit system keeps the helm deck cool in the summer and warm during the cold season. A heavy-gauge polycarbonate enclosure closes off the back of the bridge deck from the cockpit. A companion bench seat and a locker for stowage is forward of the L-shaped settee. A few additional guests can be seated on a settee to starboard, which is abaft the helm. Two skylight hatches over the helm, along with side windows and a center windshield, can be opened for salty breezes.
The helm has clear sightlines thanks to three large windows forward, along with sizable side windows, giving the helmsman a nearly 360-degree view. The space’s wood grain glows from the natural light that flows inside. Ptarmigan has a newly upgraded Garmin 17-inch multifunction display with chart plotter, autopilot, GPS, fishfinder, radar and remote-camera video display. The bow thruster and depth sounder can be a lifesaver when maneuvering Ptarmigan in tight spaces.
The U-shaped galley is located on the lower deck, which is down a few steps forward of the helm, on the port side and is adjacent to a dining/lounge area. Meal prep is made easy with the spacious countertops and a dual stainless-steel sink. Stow dry goods and galley accessories in cabinets above, or in cabinets and drawers below the counter. Cold goods can be stowed in the refrigerator or deep freezer.
Forward of the galley and dining area is the owners’ stateroom with a teak interior and teak-and-holly sole, which is found throughout the yacht. Owners can relax on a centerline queen-sized berth. There are cedar-lined hanging lockers to starboard, and stowage drawers on the port side with opening lockers beneath. Under the berth are two additional drawers, and the top of the berth hinges upward with a stowage space underneath, creating plenty of space for extended cruising. Owners also have access to the en suite head with a shower. The guest stateroom is amidships on the port side with twin berths, a hanging locker and additional drawer stowage under the berths with two drawers forward. The guest head is located on the starboard side across from the guest stateroom.
