The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club of Newport, Australia, has confirmed that it will be in Newport, Rhode Island, this September for its first-ever attempt to win the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex.

The “assault on the Corinthian championship,” as it were, will take place September 7-14 on Narragansett Bay, with the Australians being one among 20 teams registered for the event. All competitors will race aboard Swan 42 designs.

The Invitational Cup, now in its third biennial showing, is an event for amateur sailors from around the world. Teams entered in the upcoming event are from Australia, Japan, Finland, Spain, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Argentina and Italy.

Clubs from the United States had a chance to earn invitations by competing in the U.S. Qualifying Series this past September. Representing the United States will be the Larchmont (N.Y.) Yacht Club, the New York Yacht Club, the San Francisco Yacht Club, and the Seattle Yacht Club.
